August News

Next Saturday, the 12th August is our club’s AGM at 20 Edward Street, Bridport. The day follows the usual format : meeting 11am [welcome for a coffee before that], lunch about 12.30, guest speaker about 2pm.

The topic of Ian Thomas’s talk will be ‘ A Vegetation History of the North East’.

Please bring food that can be shared.

We have received a letter of resignation from our treasurer Sue Wilson, so the position of Treasurer is up for grabs.

The other relevant item for the AGM will involve short reports from members who are involved inCitizen Science Initiatives.

July’s screening of THE GIANTS.

I am pleased to report that the screening of the film THE GIANTS  was a great success. It attracted over 60 people, which in Scottsdale is significant.  We decided to arrange tickets to be sold on-line by Humanitix which, I have to say, made the whole exercise easy. [Though it was a steep learning curve]

We were lucky to have Bob Brown and his partner Paul in the audience and people were able to chat with them afterwards. There were no hecklers – sigh of relief – and a comfortable community atmosphere.

New cabins at Barnbougle.

Whilst I acknowledge our Field Nats group is not involved in political causes, it is sometimes difficult to know what to report here. However, a number of people who just happen to be N.E. Field Naturalists made a submission to Dorset Council about the intention to run a power line across Trent Water to a new development of 20 cabins happening west of the Barnbougle Dunes. Their opinion was heard and changes were made to the positioning of the power lines which means the bird habitat is now protected.

Birds Tasmania membership.

Each year, our club continues its membership of Birds Tasmania and I was thinking there might be people who don’t have a private membership but who would be interested to receive the Tasmanian Newsletter of Birds Tasmania : ‘Yellow Throat’. I can easily forward that to you if you let me know. It comes into our mail boxes every three months.
