Hello Field Nats and Friends,
Outing Saturday 13th – Scamander.
Pam and I decided that this month would be the perfect month for visiting the Winifred Curtis Reserve. We never tire of going there and it has been a couple of years since we were there as a club. Important for its biodiversity, the Reserve is protected because its 80 hectares contains bushland, heathland, dunelands and marshlands. It is known as one of the best small reserves in Tasmania and has an amazing variety of species.
The Reserve is named after Tasmania’s most distinguished botanist, Dr Winifred Curtis [1905 – 2005] who is best known for her five volumes of The Student’s Flora of Tasmania, still an important reference.
The day will begin with a short walk to a lovely nursery nearby where we will hear from Paul Frater, who is Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Reserve. Paul will give us a short tour of his land and then we will cross the road and head into the W.C. Reserve where we will walk through the bushland section to other parts, maybe the beach or the lagoon. Pam reports lots of plants blooming and lots of birds, so binoculars would be handy. Carry lunch.
Details:
Meet at 10 am in the Winifred Curtis Car Park, 2km south of Scamander on the Main Road.
This should be a lovely day if you can make it.

Tassie Cast.
For those not familiar with ABC Listen, it’s an app. which has literally hundreds of Podcasts on almost as many subjects.
One of the favourites [apart from “What the Duck?”, which is mine] is presented by Airie Ward, well known Tasmanian journalist. Called “Tassie Cast” it’s often, though not always, about environmental issues currently in the news.
For a great explanation about Rodenticides, what they are, and how they affect wildlife, we suggest you listen to the episode called “Are we unwittingly killing our precious wildlife?”
It was aired on Friday the 22nd August, 2025. Just download the ABC Listen app type the information into the search engine on the app. and then go ‘Follow’ and you will receive the weekly episode automatically.
Oh, and try “What the Duck” too.
See you Saturday,
Louise.
