JUNE OUTING – EXPLORING TUNNELS – BLUE TIER – MEET POIMENA 11 AM.

David Waldron has very kindly offered to lead this outing to the Blue Tier. We will explore Griffin’s Tunnel where we can enter the adit and see some glow worms.

We will also explore the air shafts and the rear entrance/exit. This walk is around 2km’s.

After lunch, we could have a second excursion to the Don Mine near the Crystal Creek Bridge. Another short walk. This would be on the way home for many.

You would realise, it’s almost impossible to guess what state the water levels will be in the tunnels. If the levels are too high for us to enter, but the weather is good on Saturday, there are plenty of alternatives for walks up there. As many of us who know the Tier well, the weather is changeable and can be quite cold, so come prepared !!  Gumboots and torches will be an essential part of this trip.

David will be carrying out a recce during the week and I will post more up-to-date information about this in an email and on the website late Friday afternoon 13.

NORTHEAST PARK  WEEDING UPDATE

At the last working bee, Jay and Ross went over previous jobs removing regrowth in the Willis Walkway and on the Green Corps board walk. They removed arum lily and foxglove regrowth. Then on another site, thistles, foxgloves and a watsonia. They discovered a passionfruit vine but left this job for the future.

Dorset Council is making an effort to educate staff about identification of weeds – this being one of the resolutions made in the recently adopted weed management plan.

CHECK OUT REDMAP [thanks to Jay for this snippet]

The marine environment around Tasmania is getting warmer! Tasmania’s east coast is reportedly warming 3-4 times faster than the global average.

The REDMAP Project [Range Extension Database Mapping Project] gathers photos and data of fish and marine animals from fishers and citizen scientists to help determine how populations are emerging and changing over time. Who knew we had flying fish??

The posted website observation photos are updated often. The variety of fish and marine species that are represented is fascinating to explore, and they are always looking for new reports of what people are seeing and catching.

Have a look at the link below and think about reporting your own observations.

WHAT IS THIS ?

Jill, on one of her regular beach walks photographed this footprint.  I wonder what it is?

Best wishes to all Field Nats and don’t forget to check your email or the website before the Saturday outing.
