February 2024 news

Hi Everyone,

FUTURE OUTINGS:

On February 10th:
Anne Witherden will lead an exploration of the Narawntapu National Park, near the Rubicon River and the Asbestos Range.

Access can be either via the B71, the Frankfurt Highway from Exeter on the East Tamar, or via the C741, Bowens Road from York Town.

Meet at the Parks Office and Visitor Centre at 10 am. A current Parks Pass is required for each car and can be obtained from the website –  parks.tas.gov.au

Options for walks include [see map below] Bird Hide at Springlawn or Archers Knob with either long return on beach or shorter return. Archers Knob with beach return = 9km.

Anne is keen to see the Spiranthes australis – a little seen orchid which is known to occur here.

Feel free to join the group who camp on Saturday night.

On March 9th:
Walk to the top of Mt. Horror / KONEWONGENER.  Another massive climb [675 metres], an admiration of the 360 degree views and an exploration of the Rainforest there.

On April 13th:
Looking for rhizoliths with Ross.

REPORTS :

For those who weren’t at the Blue Tier outing in January or who didn’t read the [abbreviated] report in the Advertiser, there is a link on the front page of our website to the longer report. Thanks for the photos everyone.

THE TASMANIAN NATURALIST ARTICLE:

Following a Field Nats walk along the Bridport Foreshore in February of 2023, I was encouraged by a number of members to write and submit an article for the annual journal published by the Tasmanian Field Naturalist Club. I’d like to acknowledge their support in getting this written as it now serves as a reliable record of something significant that has happened in our environment. I enjoyed doing the research and learnt a lot from the two peer reviewers to whom my work was submitted. Link on front page also.

I’m always interested to receive tit-bits from members to include in this monthly update.

For example, Pam taught herself to upload a Christmas Beetle picture onto iNaturalist. It’ll be the start of loads of fun for her, I’m sure. Check it out for yourself.

Send me your news,

Louise.
